San Rafael, CA (March 2013) – Whistlestop Meals on Wheels announced today that it will be holding Mayors For Meals Days as a part of its March For Meals campaign. Mayors Gary Phillips of San Rafael, Sandy Donnell of Belvedere, Diane Furst of Corte Madera, John Reed of Fairfax, Dan Hillmer of Larkspur, Andy Berman of Mill Valley, Pat Eklund of Novato, Kay Coleman of San Anselmo, Herb Weiner of Sausalito, and Emmett O’Donnell of Tiburon, will be participating in the event to show support for our community’s home bound and hungry seniors.

Whistlestop’s Mayors For Meals Days on Monday, March 18; Wednesday, March 20; and Friday, March 22 will include each of the city’s mayors delivering meals to the home bound residents in their communities on one of those days. Other City Council Members and County Supervisors are invited to participate in the program on subsequent weeks.

“We are thrilled about having 100% participation from Marin mayors where we have deliveries,” said Joe O’Hehir. “Mayor Phillips led the effort to recruit all of the other Marin mayors. The excitement and appreciation for this service is evident in the positive responses we have been receiving. We play a proud part in this nationwide solution to ending hunger and isolation for our home bound older adults.”

March For Meals is a national campaign during the month of March, initiated by the Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA), which seeks to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on the part of the local community.

Senior Nutrition Programs across the United States, like Whistlestop’s Meals on Wheels, promote March For Meals in their local communities through public events, volunteer recruitment and fundraising initiatives. Mayors For Meals Days are a component of March For Meals, which utilizes the involvement of over 1,500 local Mayors nationwide.
